Is a Virtual Connection Possible in an Online Course?
Today I had the opportunity to sit down with Arkova Scott, an adjunct professor at Pasadena City College. She teaches an online advanced excel course. In the interview she explained how she designs the course. Scott uses a manual as a guide and translates the information into an online format. She uses a variety of multimedia to present the materials including: captivate, audio podcasts, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. Something unique about her teaching style is that she really aims to make a personal virtual connection with each and everyone of her students. She calls it a “virtual relationship.” Scott noted that her emotional feedback on student’s assignments simulates a face-to-face experience and also motivates the students to do extremely well in class. Last but not least Ms. Scott is very adamant with her routine. She has a system of when things are to be turned in to her and students know exactly when they will get their graded project back. Some of her closing thoughts were about the importance of responding and communicating to her students in a timely fashion. This helps students keep on pace. Scott seems like a great instructor and appears to cater to a variety of learning styles.
