Is a Virtual Connection Possible in an Online Course?

Today I had the opportunity to sit down with Arkova  Scott, an adjunct professor at Pasadena City College. She teaches an online advanced excel course. In the interview she explained how she designs the course. Scott uses a manual as a guide and translates the information into an online format. She uses a variety of multimedia to present the materials including: captivate, audio podcasts, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. Something unique about her teaching style is that she really aims to make a personal virtual connection with each and everyone of her students. She calls it a “virtual relationship.” Scott noted that her emotional feedback on student’s assignments simulates a face-to-face experience and also motivates the students to do extremely well in class. Last but not least Ms. Scott is very adamant with her routine. She has a system of when things are to be turned in to her and students know exactly when they will get their graded project back. Some of her closing thoughts were about the importance of responding and communicating to her students in a timely fashion. This helps students keep on pace. Scott seems like a great instructor and appears to cater to a variety of learning styles.

That's Me

Love ME

Some say I’m clever
While others think I’m slow
Some love me
while others pretend.

That’s me- not you, not her, not him, That’s me
I wish I could stop pretending to be--
and just be me – NOT the Me you think I should be

The me- who takes life a day at a time
Walks slow because I can.
Runs fast because that’s how it should be
loves to the deepest depths of all love.
That’s me.

That’s me-
Enjoys late nights and sweet nothings &walks to anywhere.
The one who you would never know
would lie down on the line for you
That’s me.

I’m not the one you think I am.
I’d love to be that person that fits
into- a perfect little coach purse with stiletto heels.
That’s NOT me

My Beauty & talent within is often overlooked
By your unwillingness to see the world around you exists..
That’s me and who Ill always be-

-ME

Lowlight- Wake

Fancy some music for a rainy night? This song is really relaxing. Its the kind of song you might listen to after a long day of work stuck in traffic.

Lowlight - "Wake" from John Charter on Vimeo.

Check out Lowlight- An unsigned LA indie band. They just recently released their surreal-narrative music video “Wake.”  The song is from their full length album, “A Wonderful Lie.” It was mixed by Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses.

The video weaves through the song’s layered experimental soundscapes as the whispered lyrics creep with the theme of unrequited love. Lowlight’s vocalist Ed and his girl sneak into a mansion swimming pool, where later he is trapped underwater after finding her in the hands of the mansion owner.
